What to Plant This Spring

CHOOSE RESILIENT TREES

Tough weather requires tough plants. This winter whiplash is hard on us, and even harder on plants. Japanese Maples? Holly? Wisteria? European Mountain Ash? We think not. Natives are always a good choice. Here are a few of our favorite underutilized trees for Nebraska and Iowa.

  • Native Chinkapin Oak: tough, large shade tree. Smaller leaf than most oaks (easier raking!)
  • Native Swamp White Oak: upright, stately trunk and leader, uniform branching. Holds its leaves all winter—which we think makes it cool!
  • Native Northern Pecan: large shade tree, upright, bright yellow fall color, and you get to eat pecans!
  • Red Jewel Crab: great for small areas with early blooming white flowers.
