FALL IS THE PERFECT TIME TO PLANT
DECIDUOUS TREES AND SHRUBS.

Aspen ‘Prairie Gold’

Aspen ‘Prairie Gold’

The Autumn Blaze Maple and Burning Bush are the first thing most people think of when they think of fall color, however we have many other options available to us here in Nebraska and Iowa.

Thinking of planting a Burning Bush? Plant a Serviceberry ‘Regent’ instead. Unlike the Burning Bush, this 4-6ft x 4-6ft shrub is native to North America, has showy white flowers in early spring, produces edible fruit in June, and has an orange/red fall color. Burning Bush is not native, over-planted, can be invasive, and the flowers are not showy.

Here are some of our favorite fall color plants:

  • Aspen ‘Prairie Gold’
  • Chokeberry ‘Lowscape Mound’

    Serviceberry ‘Regent’

  • Viburnum lentago
  • Viburnum arrowwood
  • Sumac ‘Gro Low’
  • Serviceberry ‘Regent’
  • Spirea birchleaf
  • Oakleaf Hydrangea
  • Switch grass ‘ Shenandoah’ and ‘Cheyenne Sky’
  • Serviceberry ‘Autumn Brilliance’

Jensen Gardens has licensed Arborists on staff to help with planting or troubleshooting.  See our Healthy Landscapes Program for more information.
